I was also asked to take over the maintenance and expansion of another big Wang installation, so although not having written the original software, I did manage to fulfil this obligation too.
It meant that I was also able to sell new systems (admittedly a bit smaller) to other accommodation providers throughout the country, notably Blenheim, Napier etc and most importantly Duck Creek Farm and Holiday Resort – more of THAT later.
One thing we did at that time in addition to having direct dial in modem access to the computers for troubleshooting, was, I believe one of the first entities to pay employees via direct connection to the company's bank.
In those days, the VIP (Very Impressive Payroll) program was run and then a 5” diskette (a true floppy disk) was physically driven (or walked) to the bank where it was loaded into their computer.
This diskette, of course, contained names, bank a/c numbers etc of some hundred or more employees, together with the amounts to be paid to each.
Sure this is 'old hat' these days, but was really cutting edge when we first did it.
This meant that as well as being a 'leading light' in the wool industry we were also becoming somewhat well known in the hospitality sector too.
